Important information on
Spain Car Rental

For an enchanting, relaxing and easy trip experience to Spain, it is important to know some basic information, local customs and also general rules when discovering the country.

Best Season to Travel

The best time to travel to Spain depends on your interests and preferences. For beachgoers and outdoor enthusiasts, the summer months of June to August offer warm weather and plenty of sunshine. Spring and fall can be a bit cooler, but offer fewer crowds and lower prices. Winter can be chilly, particularly in the northern parts of the country, but offers festive holiday markets and cozy indoor activities.

Rental Car Border Crossing

If you want to cross EU borders from Spain e.g. into France, check with your car rental company beforehand. Restrictions may apply for your car rental, which can normally be lifted paying small extra fees and/or additional insurance. Be sure to carry all necessary documentation, including passports, (international) driver's license, rental agreement, and insurance proof when crossing borders.

Driving License Required

In Spain, citizens from EU and EAA countries are able to use their national driving license card to rent a car for up to 6 month. The majority of non-EU citizens are required to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to their national driving license, usable for up to six months. The IDP is not a replacement for your national driving license, and you must carry both documents with you when driving in Spain.

Rent a Car with Children

When renting a car in Spain, it's important to ensure that you have the appropriate seat for your child's age and size. Children under the age of 12, or older children which stand less than 135cm (5ft) in height, are legally required to sit in the back seat in Spain and require a mandatory booster child seat. These can normally be rented directly from the car rental company for an additional fee on site.

Car Hire Documents

When renting a car in Spain, you will need your booking confirmation, valid driver's licenses, passport or ID card, and a credit card for the security deposit.

The credit card should match the card you used for your online reservation. "Debit credit cards" may incur additional fees.

See your booking confirmation for any additional documents required.
